DITA Session 1 Introduction to computing 27-10-2010

The first session on the DITA course, Introduction to computing introduced the following concepts:
  • An introduction to the DITA module, including the need for knowledge and skills in order to manage, create and use digital information. 
  • An overview of future topics including Web 1.0; Web 2.0; Web 3.0; 
  • Underpinning conceptual level of information architecture.
  • The impact of information and ways to deal with the information overload.
  • Need for a broad understanding of information technology
  • Levels of representation
  • Bits,  binary and low levels of representation
  • Bytes, 8 bits etc.
  • Formats, ASCII Standards
  • Files, File types, Naming conventions, Mark-ups for metadata, File structure
  • Documents, building documents from files, what is a document?
A practical session introduced saving files in different formats (txt, docx, html) adding images using "link to file"
Introducing the concept of html format and how formatting of text and adding images is incorporated into the html code.


Setting up a blogger account and assigning labels to posts.
